The Yamunashtakam is a bhajan to sing the praises of the river Yamuna. The Yamunashtakam is the first of 16 works. This work, ie. the Yamunashtakam was composed by Shri Vallabh around 1491 AD.

The legend has it that Shri Vallabh, was looking for the place where he had divine realization (this place is known as Thakurani Ghat). This place is located on the banks of the river Yamuna at (27° 31′ 4.2492″ N, 77° 41′ 7.5912″ E).

Legend further has it that the goddess of the river (ie. Yamuna) herself appeared to Shri Vallabh and showed him the place. At this time Shri Vallabh composed this hymn in her praise.
